Hi, my name is Gareth and I run West London Counselling, Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy services. One of our speciality areas has always been around weight loss, helping clients to gain more awareness around their eating habits, allowing them to automatically feel differently around food and exercise.

A majority of the population would admit to struggling with their weight at some point during their lives and a lot of this can be traced back to our modern lifestyle. Often the way we feel around food begins during childhood. Some people may have experienced food as a demonstration of love, others as a comfort when they were hurt or distressed and more still as a form of reward. Many experienced the messages of “you must clean your plate” or “hurry up and finish eating” or “don’t waste your food”. All of these subtle messages and many more stay with us into adulthood where even more complex issues come into play.

Some men in a position of power and authority view size as strength and importance. As such, the subconscious message here is “the bigger you are, the more importance you carry”. For some women who have experienced abusive and traumatic relationships in the past, there can often be a hidden message of “attractiveness caused me to be abused and so if I’m overweight, men won’t find me attractive and I can avoid further abusive relationships”. People who feel insecure about themselves can often resort to eating. And then there are the issues of excessive stress in our modern world which often encourage people to eat in an attempt to supress those feelings.

Our treatment plan usually consists of two main routes. The first is through hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is an amazing tool for changing any eating issue which is based purely on habit, e.g. “I’ve done this for so long, it’s all I know now”. It’s also really affective at dealing with those old and unhealthy messages and for providing coping mechanisms to deal with stress reactions. Our weight loss hypnotherapy has an approximate 90% success rate and takes on average just 4 sessions to bring about a long lasting change.

The other route is through counselling and psychotherapy. When the root cause of any unhealthy eating habit is based in deep trauma, e.g. abusive relationships, absent parents, body image issues, etc. hypnotherapy alone is not enough. People need time, space and support to explore those painful experiences from their past and come to a point of awareness and ultimate acceptance. When they are able to do this, food is no longer a crutch for them and they can continue their lives feeling much healthier and in control. Counselling and psychotherapy treatment is an essential part of this process and provides support, boundaries and encouragement to the client.
